Developed in late 1916, the Albatros D.IV was never intended to be a replacement fighter as previously thought. Instead, it was used by the Albatros Company as a test bed for an experimental, geared version of the Mercedes engine. Three were ordered but probably only one built. The fuselage was similar to the D.I-D.III series, but featured a small headrest for the pilot and the engine was completely enclosed. The wings were a modified version of the D.II type.
Overall performance of the D.IV was poor, largely due to the teething problems with the geared Mercedes. Testing with the aircraft, using various props, continued until late April 1918 when the entire project was dropped.
Our model presented here designed in conjunction with Keith Sterner, is a rare chance to build and fly a seldom modeled aircraft in pseudo-dime scale. Although there are probably a number of scratch builts, we believe we are the first to produce this historic aircraft in kit form. Also a Special thanks to Ray Rimell, who's publications provided the ground work for this project.
