The Sopwith Snipe saw service in the last half of 1918. Designed as a replacement for the Sopwith Camel, pilots found that it was like driving a truck after having driven a sports car. The most famous exploit for the Snipe came on October 27,1918, when Maj. W.G.Barker attacked several German formations in an epic air battle against more than 60 aircraft. Having survived the engagement, he won the Victoria Cross for this historic feat.
